Astro’s Playroom Game Review

Thanks to analytics company Newzoo, we learned what kind of next-gen games Americans played in the first days after the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A full walkthrough will take you step-by-step from the start of the game to 100% completion, while the Collectibles section helps you find every Artefact and Puzzle Piece in the game! There’s even a Trophies section to help you earn that coveted Platinum Trophy. The gameplay features minimal cartoonish violence across each stage. For PlayStation die-hards, a run through Astro’s Playroom will be true bliss.

Sony leans into its PlayStation past in this frequently innovative, supremely charming old-school 3D platformer. Ico, The Last Guardian, Demon’s Souls, Patapon are all things of the past. In Sony’s new reality, there’s seemingly no more room for funding titles that resist Western trends and set their own. Basically, it means that the triggers can offer resistance if you’re trying to perform some task that requires a lot of effort. With the feature turned off, the triggers will do a full pull as normal. But once activated, the triggers might stop halfway into a pull, requiring extra effort to “push past” the resistance to get a full trigger pull.

Here, you’ll have to pull some cables to reach a new area above and defeat some nearby enemies. However, before you get through the wall by pulling the cables in some rock ahead, look to the left and walk into the flower petals to reveal a Special Bot. As the precursor to Astro Bot, Astro’s Playroom is a great platformer that all PS5 owners will have for free when they first get their console. It has four key sections, all referencing other PlayStation games and devices while remaining a challenging platformer that uses all the unique design choices the DualShock 5 controller offers. The frog suit of Cooling Springs is an absolute treasure in its DualSense use, though the levels are not necessarily my favorites.

It’s a phenomenal thing, taken even further with adaptive triggers that provide meaningful, forceful feedback. Astro’s Playroom has a new tool in that regard, of course, with the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller and its haptic feedback. Find release dates and scores for every major upcoming and recent video game release for all platforms, updated several times per week. While Astro’s Playroom’s new update was subtle, Team Asobi and PlayStation have been promoting Astro Bot’s new free DLC content. The first two new levels launched on February 13 and 20, and a new level is to be added weekly until March 13. After completing all DLC levels, a new game mode called Time Attack will be available as well.

Years Later, The Greatest Sega Genesis Game Of All Time Is More Powerful Than Ever

Once again, working together, you were able to crack the riddle and free her to make it 2 out of 4. Japan Studio gained the confidence to create a richer world for Astro after the success of Astro Bot Rescue Mission for the PlayStation VR in 2018. The positive reception of this demo then paved the way for Astro Bot, which won countless awards and accolades and even secured the title of Game of the Year 2024 amidst the fierce competition.

I handed the controller to my sister asking her to do the area for me, with the expectation this would be a one-off. Astro’s Playroom is a technical demo and free platforming game bundled with every PlayStation 5, and the gaming community could not get enough of its cutesy art style and homage to the brand’s history. Japan Studio wanted to give early users a taste of the hardware’s capabilities and showcase the improvements of the DualSense controller to give them a definitive next-gen experience. As a final reference, the music when climbing up the Memory Cards and CD-ROMs to get to the boss fight is very similar to the music that played when viewing the T. In the PS1 at the start of the level, there’s a memory card with “Ken’s” written on it. This is a reference to Ken Kutaragi, the father of the PlayStation.

It didn’t change the core of the game, but it made the overall experience better. Astro’s Playroom could easily have been a simple tech demo, and in a way it is that. Its main function is to demonstrate the possibilities of the DualSense.

The Bot with the staff is the Maiden in Black, a demon who uses souls collected by the player character to help them level up in the Nexus. Demon’s Souls got a PS5 remake in 2020 for the launch of the console. This references Concrete Genie, a 2019 PS4 game developed by Pixelopus. The main character Ash uses a paint brush that can bring his creations to life. When you get to the very end of the level, you’ll land on a Sacred Symbols rainbow bridge.

The only unknown one is the one with the Ethernet port, which doesn’t match any PlayStation system. These icons were displayed on the back of PS1 game boxes to show what features the game supported. The icons on the monitor are, from left to right, Memory Card block requirement, Dual Analog support, Link Cable support, DualShock support, PlayStation Mouse support, Player count, and Multi-Tap support. At the very start of Raytrace Ruins, there are some Bots on the right playing Ninja Bots. This was a free add-on to 2013 PS4 pack-in title The Playroom by SCE Japan Studio, which is the originator of the Bots and actually precedes the creation of Astro.

Astro’s Playroom is a free platforming game, included as a pack-in with the PS5. It’s inspired by the characters and concepts first introduced in The Playroom and The Playroom VR, which culminated in the full-blown Astro Bot Rescue Mission for PlayStation VR. The game serves as a showcase for the DualSense controller’s features and functionality. We awarded the game a 9/10 in our Astro’s Playroom PS5 review, describing it as a “love letter to PlayStation”. Both the roller ball and the ship suits were easily the best of the ones on offer. Considering both get more interesting levels after their introduction.

You might already have the Platinum trophy for Astro’s Playroom, but that low percentage on your PlayStation account might bother you, so we’re here to help you. This Trophy is earned by doing well in the races in Network Speed Run, which is located between the blue and green doorways in the CPU Plaza. To earn it, you need to race in all eight levels and have all your best times total up to less than seven minutes (so an average of about 52.5 seconds each). Progress through the level to the area with the floating DualShock controller clouds. Use OK365 to reach the ledges on the wall opposite, and then climb up to the area above. Punch the tree directly in front of you by long-holding Square to perform a spinning attack.
